History

Wales has a long an chequered history, which has left marks all over its landscape. From Neolithic burial chambers to castles ranging from 11th – 19th Century. Significant archaeological sites litter the length and breadth of this country, many within easy reach of Secret Fields.

 

Pentre Ifan – Neolithic burial chamber in the Preseli Hills, famous for providing the bluestones of Stonehendge’s inner circle.

National Wool Museum – Just a stones throw from Secret Fields is a a facinating look back at the wool trade and production of Welsh blankets.

Coracle Museum – A small museum with a collection of coracles from around the globe. Coracles are a small fishing boat, still used on the Teifi today.

Cilgeran Castle – A commanding 13th century castle perched on top of a steep sided valley with spectacular views of the river Teifi. Owned by the National Trust.

Newcastle Emlyn Castle – A ruin of a 13th century castle said to be where the last dragon was slain.

Laugharne Castle – A prominant castle standing guard on the estuary of the river Taf. Located in Lauarghne, home of Dylan Thomas

Llansteffan Castle – Ruins of a Norman castle built on the site of a large Iron Age fort. Spectacular views from it’s towers overlooking the Tywi Estuary.

Dinefwr Castle & Newton House – National Trust owned estate including historic house, castle and nature reserve.

Nevern Church, Hillfort & Bleeding Yew – 12th Century hillfort overlooking a picture perfect church containing 700 year old yew trees as well as a 13ft high Celtic cross.

Castell Henllys Iron Age Village – Reconstruction of an Iron Age hill fort built on the site of one of the most well excavated and studied sites in the UK.

St Davids Cathedral & Bishops Palace – St David’s is the smallest city in the UK, it’s 13th century Cathederal is magnificent and quite unexpected. The Bishops Palace further confirms the significance of the tiny city as a site of pilgrimage.
