Bucket List Wales
Further Afield
Whilst there is plenty to keep you busy without traveling too far. Here are some places you might like to visit if you have a little more time, or you’ve stayed with us before & have ticked off your whole ‘to do’ list. These are some of the real ‘bucket list Wales’ things that all the cool kids want on their Instagram feeds. You might find some of these a convenient stop on your route home.
Cadair Idris
On the edge of Snowdonia National Park. The most convenient route to us is from the South side, Dol Idris Car Park (2-hour drive). From here to the summit is a reasonably challenging hike, it starts almost at sea level, involves a lot of steps & around 5 hours depending on the route you choose & your level of fitness. We’d recommend taking the Minffordd path which can be hiked as an out & back or as we prefer, make it into a circular walk coming back past the lake (don’t forget a towel, it’s an incredible swim spot).
Skomer Island
This is one of the most magical day trips you can imagine if you are at all interested in wildlife. Skomer is open from April through till August & is one of the best places in the UK to see all kinds of birdlife & sea life, the most popular being Puffins. Puffins breed on the island between May & July, last year over 42,000 were recorded! The drive to the ferry is around 1.5 hours.
Bosherston/Broadhaven/St Govans
Bosherston lily ponds to Broadhaven South Beach. If you want to see the abundance of lilies then the middle of the year is best. The ponds are home to wildlife ranging from otters to dragonflies, kingfishers & herons. Make a circular by heading West along coast path to St Govans chapel, wedged impossibly into the cliffside and the ‘Huntsman’s Leap’, a steep sided crevasse with sides almost close enough to jump but wouldn’t recommend it! Parking at Bosherston (1.20 hour drive). Please be aware some of the land is used by the MOD for firing exercises, so please check opening times before traveling or you’ll be dodging bullets.
Bwlch Nant yr Arian
Red Kite feeding station as well as mountain biking/hiking/running & horse-riding trails. Approximately 1.20 hours drive away with a visitor centre/café & some well maintained & fun trails for all abilities. Check feeding times if you’re wanting to see a spectacle.
Four Waterfalls
1.5/2 hours drive, this is a good stop off for guests coming from Gloucester/Bristol direction. This is a stunning 3/4 hour walk in the Breacon Beacons National Park, not overly challenging if you are relatively fit, it does exactly what it says on the tin!
Elan Valley
A series of dams & reservoirs built in 1893 to supply Birmingham with drinking water. Great for a walk/ride/explore, the town of Rhayader sits to the East, the first town on the river Wye, proudly boasts itself as the ‘Outdoor Capital of Wales’. This area is also an ‘International Dark Sky Park’ meaning all 45,000 acres of the park are protected from light pollution, its one of the best places to stargaze in the UK. Elan Valley Visitor Centre is around 2-hours drive.
Hafod Estate & Devils Bridge
Some of the nicest woodland/waterfall walks in Wales. 8 miles of easy-to-follow waymarked paths lead you along valleys, through woodland & past several waterfalls. 1.20 hours drive to the car park, its worth taking a packed lunch as there is nothing on site. Devils Bridge is just 10 mins from Hafod & is a fun detour to visit the bridge/waterfall, there’s also an excellent steam railway from Aberystwyth to Devils Bridge.
Porth Gain & St Davids
Porthgain is about an hours drive from the farm. It’s an old harbour village with the ruins of a brick factory. The harbour has an art gallery, a good pub as well as a fish restaurant/takeaway, nice costal walks in both directions from here. 15 minutes further down the coast is St Davids, the smallest city in the UK, the Cathedral is unexpected and stunning.
Tenby
One of Wales most popular seaside towns. Think medieval walls, long sandy beaches & a pretty town centre with independent shops & cafes. Just be aware, the summer months can get crowded! Approx. 1-hour drive.
